The Club was honoured to have District Governor Roddy Duncan as our guest speaker. DG Roddy gave a passionate speech and reminded attending Rotarians of the importance of 'getting things done' and that it is what we achieve over the course of this next year that will matter the most.
As we all know, the everlasting motto of the Rotary is 'service above self' and this has been captured in the Rotary International President’s headline message for 2016 – 2017:- 'Rotary Serving Humanity'
Roddy covered all of this very well with his own interpretation of the overarching message by his saying 'It’s what we do that matters' and how vitally important it was to inform the local community and the world at large of what we do and to get recognition for this by publicising all that we undertake.
He further explained the priorities of Rotary Worldwide and these were summarised as:-
• End Polio Now – by generous giving
• Foundation – achieve our target of $100 per member of giving to Foundation
• Membership – achieve our planned membership growth and retention objectives
• Public awareness – by continuously raising the profile of Rotary in the media
DG Roddy was delighted, if not a little surprised, to hear of our Club’s great successes in the past year by adding 10 new members including 3 lady members to the Club role and by our commitment to donating $100 per member to Foundation this year via the standing order scheme and other events including the Purple 4 Polio crocus bulb planting in association with 15 schools in West Fife and the Local Community.
In conclusion Roddy stated that to maintain our sustainability we do not need so much 'revolution' but we must be prepared to embrace 'ongoing change'.
He quoted Buzz Aldrin, the famous moon landing astronaut who once said:-
'Your mind is like a parachute – if it isn’t open, it doesn’t work'
So as an organisation, we should be open-minded and recognise the need for change to achieve our goals and objectives for sustainability for our Rotary Club.
