Speaker from St Michael's Hospice

Tue, Nov 15th 2016 at 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Jane Cave receives a Cheque from Geoff and Raouf.

This meeting featured Immediate Past President Raouf Oderuth presenting a cheque for £500 to Jane Cave, Head of Voluntary Services at St. Michael’s Hospice.

This was after Jane had, through a power point presentation, talked all about what the hospice does emphasising that people come to the hospice not to die but to live.  She also mentioned the devastating fire that took place in July last year which brought about the Phoenix appeal that was launched in January this year to raise over £1 million to rebuild the affected areas, as of October the sum has reached £1,131,000. The actual cost of the rebuilding is around £4 million so the rest will be covered by £2 million from hospice reserves and £1 million for insurance.  The rebuilding, amongst many other improvements to the hospice, will create 26 fully equipped state of the art good sized en-suite bedrooms.

Jane went on to say that the hospice served a population of 183,000 in Hastings and Rother and costs £5 million a year to run with only around one third funded by the NHS, the rest of approximately £10,000 per week has to be raised through a variety of fundraising initiatives.  The hospice takes in over 300 in-patients each year, deals with over 12,000 telephone calls, does over 3,000 home visits, there are over 100 people supported in day services, provides 1,400 hours of bereavement support, and there are over 900 volunteers attached to the hospice doing a wide range of activities including 95 Hospice Neighbours who visit those in need in their own homes performing a whole host of jobs such as washing, shopping, gardening or whatever is required by the patient.  Jane also mentioned the Hospice’s Rapid Discharge programme which arranges for patients to get back home from hospital speedily.

After a vote of thanks from President Geoff Longmire, who has a strong link with the hospice as a volunteer, Jane Cave thanked Bexhill Rotary Club for the generous donation of £500 and for their continued support which has always been much valued.
