On Wednesday night 12th April, President Mike was pleased to welcome Scott Wilson and his son Owen from the Duddon Canoe Club to talk to our club about their organisation, what it does and it’s aims for the future.
Scott told us that the club has been operating for about 10 years and is based in a number of shipping containers they have had donated over the years which are formed into two compounds on Ramsden Dock road near the old ADEB base.
They originally obtained  a lottery grant which enabled them to purchase their first shipping containers which together with some surplus fencing  formed their original base, which they have developed into a gym, canteen, changing rooms as well as storage for all of their equipment.
Scott spoke about the range of activities they carry out throughout the year, river canoeing is often at its best during the winter months when they are in spate. They have Christmas Paddles and for several years they have held Halloween Parties on Piel Island at Coniston !
He spoke about the range of competitive events they undertake and have had lots of success evidenced by the haul of trophies he and Owen brought to show us. He told us about one event they had recently attended on the river Severn at Warwick where 700 paddles competed and his sons acquitted themselves well.
They also have a satellite  club at Sandside School and have several  2 man kayaks  to mix able bodied with disabled paddlers and for some, they can raft together two canoes so that no one is denied the experience of being on the water.
Scott and his eldest son had been on an expedition, exploring 120 miles of the river Spey over  3 days last year. He said it was a tiring fabulous experience, wild camping on the banks of the river and something he hoped he an Owen would be able to do soon.
Their activities are not confined to the water, they also have lots of social events and take part in the C2B walk and the Ulverston lantern festival as well as holding ceilidhs at  Pennington Village hall.
After several questions Scott and Owen were thanked by Rotarian Paul Silver, the club host for the evening.
