The Mayor of Richmond upon Thames has his blood pressure checked at our Stroke Awareness Day at Squires Garden Centre on 24th April.

On the weekend of 23rd/24th April 2016 Rotary clubs from around Great Britain and Ireland teamed up once again to support the Stroke Association and run 'Know Your Blood Pressure Day' events.

Having a regular blood pressure check is very important. Estimates suggest there could be almost seven million people with high blood pressure who are undiagnosed and at risk of having a stroke. Many people have high blood pressure without realising it because it often has no symptoms. High blood pressure is far... more common than you would think and can be deadly, but it is treatable. It is very important therefore to highlight the problem and to diagnose and offer advice to sufferers.

The Rotary Clubs of Twickenham and Twickenham upon Thames ran their event at Squires Garden Centre, Twickenham on Sunday 24th April and members of the public were able to have their blood pressure checked free of charge. We were pleased to be joined by Grace Gibbs a specialist healthcare worker and by our own club member Paul Bartlett, a retired GP.

We were also delighted to be visited by Councillor Martin Seymour, the Mayor of The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

In the space of 6 hours the team dealt with 80 people, 8 of whom were referred to their own GPs for further examination and 2 who were recommended urgent appointments.

This was a great way to raise awareness of the link between high blood pressure and strokes and we feel it Important to continue our annual "Know Your Blood Pressure Day".

In the meantime you can get your blood pressure checked by your doctor, at your local pharmacy and by many major supermarkets providing health care products.
