Brite Hopes Health Project

Dear fellow Rotarian

Your Club kindly supported the above project for a mobile clinic in Kwa Zulu Natal. The Clinic has now been operational for almost a year and I received a report from PDG Hennie de Bruin who has been our “man on the ground” following a recent visit that he made to see the Clinic in operation. His comments are:

The mobile clinic is doing great work!

The mobile clinic nursing staff overwhelmed me with their gratitude:

“This is a great clinic.  This is the best!  Having this (facility) makes me want to come to work every day!  Last week Thursday and Friday, we saw over 100 patients each day!”

I hope my pictures tell the story.  Today our mobile clinic visited two sites and at each they attended to over 40 patients.  After a thorough history taking and examination the nurses dished out cough mixtures, pain killers, etc. Where necessary they referred the patients to doctors in Edendale Hospital.

Do note the people we are helping: young children, mothers with babies and old folk.  The most vulnerable!

Schools (pic 1) have proved to be good sites for the mobile clinic.  Our nurses were also able to give input regarding those children who needed feeding.

I was fortunate in being able to be present when the mobile clinic for which our Club was the instigator was handed over to its operator in Kwa Zulu Natal. The Director and Board members of the Kwa Zulu Natal Health Authority asked me to extend their grateful thanks to all of you for your generous support in enabling this project to be completed for the benefit of the many thousands on needy patients in their area.

Brite Hopes Health Project

In many parts of rural Africa where the chance to receive any medical treatment is virtually non-existent, those suffering with AIDs and other health problems are at a severe risk. Kirkcudbright combined with 14 other Clubs in District 1020 plus Stranraer in District 1230 and the District 1020 DDF provided approx. £23,000 The two Rotary Clubs of Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal (South Africa District 9370) provided approx. £9,800 including DDF.

This Mobile Medical Clinic, will not only solve the health diagnosis problem for people, but will provide or facilitate assistance to many thousands currently with, at best, inadequate medical services. This Clinic has now been handed over fully equipped to the Kwa Zulu Natal Health Authority who will be the operators and provide the medical team to run the operation. It will serve an area of 24,000 hectares (about the same size as Luxembourg).

The final cost of the Clinic is around £60,000. The Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation was for $58,356.00 USD The Mobile Clinic is now operational, serving the needs of many deserving cases .
