Sandy Bannerman: Rory Bannerman - Sports Discipline

Thu, Apr 21st 2016 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker

President Mairhi Trickett welcomed four members of Edinburgh Rotary Club to last week's meeting. President Jackie Grigor brought with her Senior Vice President John Williams, Junior Vice President Ian Starkey and Past President Neville Belton.  The speaker Rory Bannerman was introduced by his father Sandy and he delivered an excellent talk on Discipline in Sport and the part played by Sports Tribunals.  He is a member of the team of 16 professional people from whom the tribunal is selected.  Rugby matters come under the SRU and misdeamours such as foul play etc are made by paper report from referees and officials or personal hearings.  After hearing the evidence the tribunal can impose various sanctions including a ban from the sport.  The Six Nations representatives  meet periodically at Twickenham to try and standardise proceedings but different interpretations can arise from France and Italy compared to the Home Unions.  Football Hearings are held at Hampden Park when the procedures are similar to rugby and appeals against sentences can be heard and he gave some examples of the various problems which can arise.  They adjudicate on all levels of the sport and do not always have the benefit of video evidence to assist them in making their decision.  Interesting questions resulted from the talk after which the President gave the club's vote of thanks to Rory.
