Jim Sweeney - Whisky Tasting

Thu, Dec 10th 2015 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Jim spoke, enthusiastically, to the Club on the subject of single malt whiskies. During the course of the presentation, the members, and guests (this was a popular talk!), had the opportunity to sample four malts and to discuss their various flavours

There was another large turnout of Rotarians, and their guests, at tonight's meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw. This was not surprising, as it was a malt whisky tasting evening! The guest speaker was local man Jim Sweeney who has a far reaching knowledge of whisky, and, in particular, single malt whiskies. Malts are distilled in four geographical areas Lowland, Highland/Speyside, Island and Campbeltown. Jim had brought along four malts for members and guests to taste but the identities of each was kept a secret until the end of the tasting. The first was a Lowland malt which nobody guessed. The second was a vatted malt from Speyside. The third taster was a 12 year old from Speyside. The last was an Island malt which two of the guests recognised as being a Talisker.

In the District Quiz, a Motherwell and Wishaw team of Andrew Steven, Bill McCallum, Willie Talbot and Roy Simpson went to Shotts to play the local team. Unfortunately, in a fairly close fought contest, they lost by 23 points to 19.
