36th. CHARTER DINNER, 10th March 2016

Our 36th Charter dinner at Moortown Golf Club on 10th March 2016, was an extremetly enjoyable and successful event. Sixty people sat down to a very enjoyable 3 course dinner. There was a minimum of formality, despite our District Governor Elect Phil Poole (representing DG Hazel Haas who could not be present) and Assistant Governor Andrew Wilson being present. Dress was lounge suits. After dinner, and the toast to 'Rotary', we had a very excellent talk from Ian Clayton, a local author and broadcaster. Ian took us on a verbal journey through the sixties, seventies and eighties that chimed with so many of us, relating to his childhood and youth in Featherstone, Yorkshire, and what followed. Ian is a very excellent wordsmith and performer and he kept us spell-bound for over half an hour. Those that were not there missed something special. Thanks go to the Staff of Moortown Golf Club (home of the very first Ryder Cup 1929 - CLICK HERE for more details), who made us so welcome and looked after us so well.

He has worked across Europe as well as China and the United States. (Source: Wikipedia).

 CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY

The party of the year took place at our meetings venue, the Bingley Arms, on Thursday 17th December, and a jolly good time was had by all. The food and drink were excellent, as was the company - a select band of 28 diners. The 'Pig of Good Fortune' was opened and a surprising amount of over £200 was discovered. This is going to Rotary's Polio Plus. Well done to Cyril for guessing the amount almost to the pound! Mr President announced the receipt of a donation of £3,000 from a local group via our Club Secretary, to be used for the benefit of local projects. He also announced that the Club is donating £200 to the relief effort for the people caught up in the Cumbrian floods. After the meal we all enjoyed a quiz with a Leeds and Yorkshire flavour, with the top team getting 24 points out of 26. The final draw of the year of the Club's '100 Club' took place with Rotarian Mike Freeman walking off with the top prize of £100, guaranteeing a good time will be had by all in his family this festive season. The party broke up at about 11 o'clock with everyone wishing each other a Very Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year.

CHARITY CHRISTMAS WHISKY DRAW

With the kind permission of the Licensee, members of the Rotary Club of Leeds Elmete visited the Bingley  Arms, Bardsey, Leeds on Thursday and Friday 10th and 11th December 2015, and completed their Annual Charity Whisky Draw (for a tregnum bottle of whisky - a gallon).

The winners were local couple Mr & Mrs B. Hepworth, who were presented with their prize in the pub on the Friday evening. All of the profits from the Whisky Draw - over £100 - are being donated to local charities. Club President Bill Baker thanked the very generous customers of The Bingley Arms, along with the Licencee and Staff, for again making the Annual Whisky Draw such a success.
