Scott Elliot: Tommy Stevenson - Wrestling

Thu, Jan 14th 2016 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker

President Mairhi Trickett welcomed members to last week's Rotary Club meeting to hear Tommy Stevenson give his talk on his career in professional wrestling when it was at its zenith in years gone bye.  Tommy, a native of Govan, took up the sport as a teenager and competed under the name of Scott Thomson.  Although now a great-great-grandfather he is still sprightly and fit and gave an interesting account of the sport which had a huge following on Saturday afternoon sports TV in the 70's and 80's.  It featured household names such as George Kidd, Andy Robbins and Hercules the Bear, Bill Wilson amd, of course, also the fairer sex, the 26 stone Klondyke Kate.  He proudly showed his award of the Rotary Community Service Award from Irvine Rotary Club and the Services to Wrestling Award of 2015.  Tommy had many interesting facts and snippets to regale the members with which was much enjoyed after which Past President Scott Elliot gave a warm vote of thanks.  A quiz night for the public is being held on Friday, 12th February at 7 p.m. in the Catholic Hall and the club is seeking their support in teams of 4 and details can be obtained from Kerr Scott on 375015.
