STORY BY JAN AND LAWRIE COMBINED.
"The rally ‘entrants’ assembled in the Burley field car park at 9.30 with the weather making a firm statement that we were ‘in for it’,probably for the rest of the day!
We set off, a cheerful bunch of 38 Rotarians and friends and determined to make the most of the day in spite of the sleet and anything else that we might encounter on the way. However, no one had predicted that the two fords to be crossed en route would have raging torrents flowing over them to a depth of about 23 centimetres [nearly 10 inches in old money].
Having made these crossings what else could befall us? Well the befalling took the form of a huge tree, blown down and completely blocking our chosen route! At this point, Sue Gully, wearing the latest in high viz jacket, together with a very snazzy bin liner, did a fantastic job of re-directing we travellers whilst making light of her obvious discomfort.
The coffee break at Kings John’s Inn, Tollard Royal was a great relief in more ways than one!
Our party then set off confidently for Howards House Hotel at Teffont Evias where we all enjoyed the social gathering and a super 3 course lunch.
After lunch we checked the answers to the clues set along the route, many of us failing miserably! The raffle completed the afternoon’s entertainment and all departed in happy mood, the winners clutching their prizes.
We are so grateful
to our event leader and planner Bridget who led her team of Geoff, Sue Gully,
Mary Adcock and Pauline who all contributed to our very successful day out.
All the proceeds of the raffle etc (£340) will be forwarded to Canine Partners, Jan’s chosen charity"
