An AED (automated external defibrillator) is a device that gives the heart an electric shock when someone has suffered a cardiac arrest and 'reboots' it. They can be used on most children and as well as adults.
Our Heartstart courses include an introduction to the use of AEDs.
Using an AED before an ambulance arrives can double the patient's chances of survival.
AEDs are designed to be used by anyone. No experience or training is required as, when switched on, the unit tells you what to do, examines the patient and only delivers a shock when necessary.
Kingsbridge Estuary Rotary Club has funded the provision of an AED in Kingsbridge but is also happy to give advice to local parish councils and other groups interested in acquiring one for their community. Financial help may be available from the British Heart Foundation.
South Hams Newspapers have an online map showing the locations of AEDs in the South Hamshere. There's a QR code each week in the paper which you can scan with a smartphone to bring up this map.
