Seniors Together in Rossendale (STIR) project.
STIR received funding from the East Lancs Clinical Commissioning Group (ELCCG) for a project to deliver reminiscence work in Rossendale, and specifically to help create Memory Boxes for people with dementia.
Rossendale Rotary are providing these boxes free of charge to STIR, to help them with this valuable project. The boxes are then painted and decorated by each participant to create a physical box of memories.
STIR Chairwoman Barbara Ashworth commented:
"Just a brief note re the project so far - we are just half way through the sessions now and have run 10 each in Underbank House and Barker Court Bacup. We have had tremendous feedback both from the residents who have thoroughly enjoyed them and from staff who have seen the benefits in terms of new friendships developing and better use of communal facilities.
People have taken great care in decorating the boxes in their own style. The boxes contain anything people want to put in of their own but we have been able to provide them with for example scrolls of their personal timelines, enhanced photographs and front pages of the local newspaper on the day they were born. There have been wonderful conversations, much laughter and some sadness but at the end of each session, people have gone away smiling and chatting.
On Thursday December 3rd, we will be holding a tea dance in the Broadwater Hall, Bacup, where the theme will be 1940s with demonstrations of dances and an opportunity to display their memory boxes for those who wish to bring them along."
