Unveiling of Coin Collector

At 11 o’clock on Friday 21st August in bright sunshine a lively contingent from the Rotary Clubs of Bexhill and Senlac congregated in the recently opened Marina Court Gardens to witness and celebrate the official unveiling of the Rotary Coin Collector.

With the Coin Collector draped in a Rotary International flag, Bexhill Rotarian Roger Batey invited the President Bexhill Rotary Club, Raouf Oderuth, to say a few words to mark the occasion.

Raouf began by welcoming everybody and gave a brief background of Rotary International which is the largest volunteer organisation in the world and was formed over 100 years ago.   He assured everybody that all the monies collected in the Coin Collector will be donated to local needy causes.

Raouf in unveiling the Coin Collector went on to thank Rother District Council for backing the project and for allowing it to be placed in such a prominent position in the town – there to accept these thanks was Cllr Jimmy Carroll, Chairman of Rother District Council and also a Past President of Senlac Rotary Club.

Raouf also thanked a number of others associated with the project:

  • First, Jordan Whitewood-Neal for coming up with the concept of the Coin Collector in the first place
  • Michael Whiting (who sadly wasn’t able to attend) who as designer and architect developed Jordan’s initial work
  • Rhett Thompson who did such a professional job on the signwriting
  • Bexhill Rotarian Hugh Allen who actually built the Coin Collector
  • Cllr and Senlac Rotary Club Past President Stuart Earl (who was unable to attend) and Senlac Rotary Club Past President David King for their involvement and support in making the Coin Collector a reality
  • Bexhill Rotary Past President Roger Batey for working in the background so that the Coin Collector could be unveiled
  • Rotary District 1120 Governor, Ray Dixon, accompanied by his wife, Jenny, for attending the unveiling

Also attending the celebrations were Bexhill President Raouf Oderuth’s wife, Vivian, along with Senlac Rotary Club’s President Elect Glyn Parry and Hastings Rotary Club President Peter Georgiadis.

To round off the ceremony, all those present with much jingling of cash each donated a coin to the Coin Collector, and expressed the hope that over the coming years Rotary in Bexhill with lots of generous donations can help a host of charitable causes in the locality.
