Many members were absent as they were away on holiday. Sue Walker from Limekilns, a guest of Robin Grant attended. As the Chief Commissioner for Guides in Scotland, Sue may be able to help with building confidence of unemployed girls in our club employability programme.
Our speaker on Gasification of deep coal was Andrew Nunn of Cluff Natural Resources. He explained the chemical extraction of methane using steam. The estimate for Kincardine of 43 million tonnes of coal could last 20-30 years. However, there are many technical and operational issues which have evolved over 100 years, since town gas has been produced in the same manner. The contrast with Fracking is a low pressure extraction and longer established design and safety. Feedstock, electricity and hydrogen can all be produced from the process. The demonstrator project for Fife would be aprox 1,000m deep and far below the water table. CO 2 and water can be recovered from the exit pipes. The planning application for Fife has been presently deferred..
This was yet another topical, interesting and thought provoking presentation.
