Thu, Jul 23rd 2015 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker

A good turnout of members at last week's meeting of the Rotary Club was welcomed by President Mairhi Trickett to hear David Oliver, son of Past President David, give an interesting talk on mini and primary schools rugby in Hawick of which he is coach and co-ordinator assisted by an enthusiastic team of coaches.  He started coaching Stirches School 7 years ago when they started with nothing and by dedicated hard work has built them into a trophy winning team and lately they won the prestigious Keown Trophy for the first time in 44 years.  The Hawick Mini-Robbie Dyes was formed and now 130 boys and girls turn up at Mansfield Park each Sunday morning full of viguour and excitement.  They run an annual tournament costing £1,000 which is all self-funded thanks to dedicated parents, friends and supporters.  David and his team are the epitome of the amateur rugby supporter and the future of Hawick rugby starts with them and their colleagues in guiding them in their first steps some of whom will be the stars of the future.  Kerr Scott gave a warm vote of thanks to David.  Russell Gray, Christchurch, New Zealand, was the guest of David Oliver, Senior and was on a visit to Hawick with his wife Dorothy (nee Taylor) who emigrated from Hawick in 1957 with her parents and two sisters.
