International Projects in 2013-14

Details of the projects we completed in 2013-14

In 2013-14 we raised money for two charities described below:

Lourdes hospital, in Dharwad, Karnataka State, India.

Lourdes Hospital, also known as The German Hospital, is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), run by the Sisters of Charity.

It is known for its high standard of service, and being a Charitable Hospital, it is a boon to many poor people in and around Dharwad. It is a 150 bedded general Hospital, which admits on an average 3000 patients annually.  The sisters have been providing dedicated service to the people of Dharwad and surrounding villages and the medical facilities have been provided and upgraded according to the need of the people of the area, making the best use of the resources available so as to provide proper health-care for the people at an affordable cost.  It provides a service to a population of about 300,000-500,000 people.

It also has a small outreach unit, which reaches out to 17 villages around, Dharwad. It has also got a fully fledged blood bank (run by the Rotary Club of Dharwad). On an average about 5% of both the inpatients as well as outpatients are patients living with HIV and AIDS. HIV/AIDS care is mainstreamed in the hospital. Special care is given to meet the needs of HIV patients with medical management and psycho-social support.

On 9th September 2013 a successful fundraiser took place when a number of Members, their families and friends enjoyed a meal at the Jaipur Spice Restaurant at Busby Stoop to raise funds for this charity.

Maternity Hospital in Elobeid, Sudan

This hospital in Sudan is a very busy maternity unit with approximately 10,000 deliveries per year. It is in desperate need of basic equipment and financial help ie Blood Pressure machines, thermometers, disposable gloves, foetal heart monitors, instrument sterilisers etc.

SALAMAT, a group of Sudanese doctors working in the UK, contribute their time, expertise and financial aid raised through charitable funding activities. The group visits various parts of Sudan twice a year. Dr Anand Nadgir and Dr Sandhya Nadgir, both of whom are members of our Rotary Club,  had the privilege to join this group and visited Sudan in March 2013. Sandhya visited the maternity hospital and also inspected the maternity unit in Elobeid, and prepared a report on the gaps and deficiencies of this unit. This report highlighted a range of equipment and service improvement measures that can be achieved through  financial aid.

A successful fundraising event was held in April 2014, when guests donned African costumes of various sorts for an enjoyable African Themed Evening.  Over £800 was raised for the charity.
