Philippines by Jen and Kirsten Love, VOT - Jim Mcpherson

Jen and her sister Kirsten are former students of Selkirk High School and this year and last they ventured to the Philippines to support a community primary school.

In July 2014, Jen volunteered with the Global Volunteer Network and partnering Filipino organisation called CERV-Philippines. The work of her volunteering team was carried out in Sugod Elementary School on Tablas Island of the Romblon Province. She was there on a 'School building maintenance program' in response to Typhoon Haiyan and built a water storage tank. They also kick-started a school feeding program (the breakfast club) to ensure a nutritious breakfast for all of the children whose families can not afford it. Jen became friends with the Principal of the school and the family she had stayed with and kept in contact with them after her first trip out there. They had provided great hospitality in return for the efforts of the volunteers.

This year Jen and Kirsten decided to go back to Sugod Elementary School to continue the efforts from the previous trip, do more teaching and help the breakfast club get going again as it had run out funding in May this year. As well as paying their own way to get there they raised funds here in the Borders through a fundraising bakesale at the Borders General Hospital, an evening of music and generous sponsorship. Funds raised were taken out with them and directly handed over to the school and spent where needed. Their involvement in the school included teaching art and pre-school classes, the school feeding programme and the set up of a new in-school library.

After having received an incredible amount of enthusiasm and funding support from the Selkirk Rotary Club last year, they wish to share the stories and lessons learned of both Jen's trip in 2014 and their joint experience this past July. Through a collection of photographs, they would like to talk about the community they visited, the school, and the work that they achieved.
