Writer and professional Photographer, Mark gave an illustrated talk on some of his golf commissions, with wonderful photographs of golf courses. Mark is son of member Bruce Alexander.
The speaker at the weekly lunch meeting of the Rotary Club of St Andrews was Mark Alexander. Educated locally he is both a writer and professional photographer and illustrated his talk with images of golf courses around the world. He brought with him prints showing his work which had been part of his exhibition at the Gullane Art Gallery during the Scottish Open 2015. He travels extensively and has taken photos of 150 golf courses (some 50 in Scotland) in 16 countries on 6 continents.
He is currently undertaking a major project with the Marriot Hotel and Golf Resort chain in the UK which includes interior hotel shots as well as the courses. His photography includes golf club houses and golfers as well as writing illustrated features for golf magazines. He also illustrates articles for magazines on topics such as food. The different techniques required for indoor versus outdoor photography were explained and the importance of the time of day and the season of the year. The most important times to get the best light to show contours is at sunrise and sunset. Above all he emphasised the need for patience mentioning that his autobiography would be titled ’Cursing the Clouds’He is shortly off to a project in Bordeaux and will be accompanied by his wife Yvonne who is also in the business. Following the talk he answered questions after which Robert Crawford thanked Mark on behalf of the members for an illuminating and educational discussion enjoyed by all.
