Marshall Papworth Scholars

Mon, Jun 20th 2016 at 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

On Monday 20th June, The Rotary Club of March welcomed 8 scholars from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Senegal, Uganda, and Kenya. (Click to see Video from John Cox) These students are here courtesy of the Marshal Papworth Trust, receiving tuition and guidance in agricultural skills and land management technics.

With these lessons learnt, it is their ambition to put them into practice on return to their homelands.

Mr.Marshal Papworth was a Farmer from Huntingdonshire and Member of the East of The England Agricultural Society, who tragically lost his life in an aviation accident. In 2001, the Marshal Papworth Fund was established to provide one year scholarships to educate agricultural and horticultural students from developing countries. The March Rotary has for many years had association with the Trust, inviting students annually to meet members and explain the particular problems they face at home. A tap with running water is often a ‘luxury’.

Their visit gave an insight into farming, far removed for our local traditions.

The Students were; Bahiru Bonsema, Doni Gurara, Shadrack Nyugwa, Modou Ndao, Alioune Fall, John Opio, Lorna Oketch, and Domanicus Thomas.
