International Aid - Emma Forster

Thu, Jun 25th 2015 at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Our speaker today was Emma Forster, talking on International Aid

Host: Andrew Harrison
Reception: Cecil Laverick & Alan Kingston

Emma, whom many Rotarians will remember from her days at Finchale is now the International Partnership Officer for Northumbria Healthcare, with special responsibility for the Northumbria - Tanzania Partnership.

In a sense the Northumbria Trust is 'twinned' with the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre and Emmea is the liaison. She explained in great detail how the partnership wotks and illustrated the benefits it brings not oly to Tanzania but also to the Northumbria volunteers who spend time at the KCMC.

Examples of this two way co-operation are : the development in Tanzania of a new material for plaster casts, using honey and costing £1 per 'pot' compared with the UK version at £300 !

Physiotherapy and Laparoscopy programmes have been introduced into KCMC to the great benefit of patients there.

A new challenge for Emma is to help develop a dedicated Burns Unit there - there are 265,000 deaths per year due to burns and the aim is to have a new unit open by 2016.

We wish Emma the very best of luck in her endeavours.
