Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
OUTSIDE VISIT to EMLEY MOOR MAST 1st June.
On the evening of Monday 1st of June Luddites assembled at the Emley Moor Mast, the weather couldn't have been worse, raining, cold and with a gale blowing.
Paul had organised two groups the early group met at 18:00 followed by the second group at 19:30.
Luddites were met by Site Manager Paul French who gave a guided tour of the mast complex.
The Mast known officially as the Arqiva Tower is a concrete structure, 1084ft tall the highest free-standing in the uk, the fourth tallest tower in the EU, 70ft taller than the Shard skyscraper, six times higher than Nelsons Column.
Paul took Luddites into the base of the tower.
Paul explained that this tower is the third mast on this site, the first erected in 1956 was 443ft high a lattice mast for Independent Television..
The second mast 1265ft guyed tubular mast,9ft dia tube, one of the tallest in the world at the time.On 19 March 1969 a combination of strong winds and weight of ice brought the structure down. No one was injured but it disabled BBC2 UHF and ITV VHF transmissions. BBC1 continued from Holme Moss.
The third tower construction began in 1969, a UHF 625 colour transmission began 21 Jan 1971 and the 405 transmission 21 April 1971. It takes eight minutes to reach the top of the tower in the elevator. More than 1.5 million people rely on the mast at its top to beam hundreds of channels of digital TV to them from Greater Manchester to Scarborough.
Paul then led us to the buildings that supply the signals for the mast, six multiplexers for all the different channels, three digital radio ensembles and local radio stations. It is the main station for 57 relay and repeater station throughout Yorkshire.
The mast supplies TV signals to most of Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.
Paul finished the tour with a visit to the control room. The engineers control the TV and radio for all UK masts through all regions in the UK, very impressive.
Luddites were then blown down Emley Moor by the gale to the Blacksmiths Arms for a meal.
Big thanks to Paul for organising the tour.
