A voluntary solution to the absence of an official Tourist Information Office!

Esther Ashby, a Founder Member of Durham Pointers, gave a very informative talk at Durham Rotary Club today. In 2011 Esther and Colin Wilkes (of the Durham Markets Company) had a chance encounter with tourists trying to find their way around the City. Realising that, since the closure of the Tourist Information Centre, there was a need for some signposting, they set up public meeting to talk about the problem. 15 people attended a meeting in the Cathedral and another 12 in the Town Hall. This was the start of Durham Pointers, a volunteer service to welcome visitors and help them to find their way around the sights of the City. The service was launched in May 2012 with 52 volunteers. There are now 60 volunteers in the team and new members are always welcome. They can be found in the Market Place, Monday to Friday and on special event days, between May and September. They also run a "meet and greet" service at the coach station on Freeman's Quay. Look out for the bright pink jackets, they are "Here to Help".

The Pointers website is now active ...
