Today's scheduled speaker, Alan Bennet from Alington House Community Association, was unable to be with us due to illness.  But, at very short notice, the Reverend Canon Robert Lawrance stepped in.  Robert is the Area Dean of the Durham Deanery and he gave a short talk on the relevance of the recently published House of Bishops' Pastoral Letter on the subject of the 2015 General Election.

Despite our golden rule within Rotary that "we don't do Religion or Politics", it soon became obvious as Robert covered the key points of the letter, entitled "Who is my neighbour", that we in Rotary are on the same "wavelength".  The letter has received criticism from across the political spectrum and we may not agree with some of the detail, but the words on Peace and Community are very close to the Rotary heart.  A particularly telling concept described by Robert was community as a "global village" because in Rotary International "We're For Communities"!

A thought provoking talk!
