The Crocus Planters 2014

Planting more crocuses to increase the display for next spring


The team turned out again this morning despite the weather forecast to plant even more crocus bulbs to further enhance the display for next spring.

This is the fourth year for crocus planting with the idea to carpet the central reservation with lovely Spring colour. As work got underway miraculously it did not rain as forecast. In fact it held off until we were finished.

Purple bulbs were chosen to represent the colour of ink dabbed on a child's little finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio in the few remaining parts of the globe since Rotary commenced its campaign to eradicate polio in 1985.

Rotary is working with the Eden Project, the International Flower Bulb Centre and the National Trust to plant millions of crocus bulbs to make this the world's largest bulb plant in support of global causes with the aim of being entered in the Guiness Book of Records. 

Big thanks go to Cumbria Highways Department who once again helped Rotary in this endeavour.
