We considered ourselves fortunate and privileged that Sue was able and willing to find the time to meet us and to offer her thoughts on how Edinburgh was faring in these challenging times.
In fact the message was a very positive one. Edinburgh had come through the financial crisis relatively well and was prospering. Inward investment was continuing at a high level with the financial and IT sectors and of course tourism leading the way. As a consequence unemployment was low and Sue was clearly delighted and proud to be able to say that employment opportunities for school-leavers had improved greatly during her time in Edinburgh.
She was also able to report that the Edinburgh trams were now achieving higher passenger levels than had been forecast and that they had contributed to the development of Edinburgh Airport. Looking ahead there was the possibility of the line being extended to Leith.
Sue talked easily and confidently with minimal notes and she answered questions fully and clearly. When asked what she would do with her time after her retirement later this year she made clear that her range of interests and responsibilities outwith the Council would allow little time for sitting in the sun.
Past President Roy Stirrat offered the Club’s vote of thanks to a speaker who had achieved academic qualifications, professional success and recognition as a Dame of the British Empire through hard work and commitment. A most impressive lady.
