International Rotary Summer Camp

Summer Camp for two Romanian Students

Every year for over twenty years our club has brought two Romanian students (actually ethnic Hungarians, from Transylvania) to Saddleworth.  We have had an association with a school in Cluj-Napoca during this period, and the students are chosen by the staff as a prize for the top male and female students in their final year, based on a variety of criteria, important amongst which is their participation in community affairs and helping others.  The way in which students work to try to win this prize apparently contributes to the great, responsible attitude of the school population.

They spend several days being hosted by a club member, during which time they are taken to places of interest, such as York, Bronte country, and Manchester museums, then go on spend ten days at a Summer Camp at Pettypool.  Here they take part in various activities, such as climbing, go-kart racing, archery and hiking.  They also spend a weekend during this period visiting the Isle of Man.

Spending this time with a group about twenty other youngsters, from places as far away as Macau, exposing them to different cultures, is a life-changing experience for all of them.
