War Baby to Daft as a Brush - Brian Burnie

The North East's Cancer Patient Care charity ...

Brian entertained us with tales of his experiences as a youngster working for Laws Stores in and around Newcastle and then went on to explain something of how he came to establish the Daft as a Brush charity.  This organisation provides transport for cancer patients to get them to hospital in a timely manner for their chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Brian had developed a successful business and had opened a hotel - Doxford Hall in north Northumberland - but as he approached his 65th birthday he decided to sell up and devote all his time and money to charitable causes.  Surely an outstanding example of "Service above Self"?

However, there is a sad side to Brian's story as reported in the Daily Telegraph on Monday 22 September.

By the way, did you know the derivation of the saying "daft as a brush"?  Have a look here to find out.
