President Peter Farr welcomed 6 visitors from Cumbernauld Rotary Club and our Global Grant scholar, Christina Mbiza to last week’s meeting.

The speaker for the evening was club member Audrey Cooper who is Project Manager for one of the sections of the new Ethane Project which is key to the survival of the Grangemouth Plant, following the industrial unrest in 2013. The Survival Plan relies on importing petrochemical feedstock (shale gas ethane) from the USA to replace the declining (and considerably more expensive) volume from the North Sea.

The Project commenced in December 2013 following the workers acceptance of the Survival Plan in November. Planning permission was granted in May and a loan guarantee for £230m in July enabled works to start in September 2014.

The scope of project is to build a new infrastructure to allow ethane to be offloaded from bulk tankers, transported by pipeline to a storage tank then taken by a further pipeline to the existing KG Plant for processing.

Audrey outlined her part of the project which is the construction of the Import Pipeline taking the ethane from the unloading jetty to the storage tank. This is a massive project accounting for some 25% of the overall cost, although Audrey noted that the Tank appeared to be the main focus of attention and was her ‘four letter word’ despite being only 40% of the overall cost. Audrey conceded, however, that is was the largest tank of its kind at 58m diameter and 33m high. Its construction involved, among other things, a continuous 12 day pour of concrete for the 900mm thick walls.

The pipeline project involves substantial ground preparation, including 1,300 piles, 500 concrete support bases, 2,000 cubic metres of concrete, 600m tonnes of steelwork and 8.5km of pipework. Currently, the project is on time and on budget for completion by October 2016.

Peter Holmes thanked Audrey for her excellent talk and commended her for the work she was doing on the project.
