The annual debate with Stirling University Debating Society was held on 26 March 2015.

Members with the Stirling University Debating Society.
Apologies for the out of focus picture!

Last week's meeting was enlivened by the attendance of 8 members of the Stirling University Debating Society who joined us for our annual debate on two topical subjects.
The first topic to be debated was 'the emergence of Social Media has been a blessing rather than a curse' and was proposed by Rotarians Alan Lee and Allan Macpherson and Matthew Donnely. Opposing the motion were Beth Cairns, Megan Stewart and Rotarian Nick Rawlings. Chair was Aodhan Byrne who kept the teams to strict timescales. A 'before and after' show of hands showed an even split in the audience with 1 person from each side having changed their view following the debate.
Following a break for a soup and sandwich meal, the second motion was that 'further immigration is beneficial to the UK'. This session was chaired by Beth Cairns and the proposers were Sean Adams, Joshua Martin and Rotarian Colin Strachan with opponents Liam Stewart, Ryan Petteranna and Rotarian Ken Murray.
Before the debate, 16 members of the audience supported the motion, 4 were against and 2 abstained.
Following a very lively debate and questions, the opposers had managed to convert 3 of the audience and an additional 2 had abstained.
President elect Mary Fraser thanked all the participants for what had been a very enjoyable evening and looked forward to continuing the discussions with the students next year.
Next week's meeting will hear from our Euroscola, Anna Steen, who has recently returned from her trip to the European Parliament at Strasbourg.
