Last week's meeting was held in the new Forth Valley College, Stirling Campus which was opened in 2012. The visit was organised by Vocational committee member, Peter Holmes and members were welcomed by College Principal Dr Ken Thomson, Head of Business Development Bob Armstrong and Depute Business Development Manager Caroline Hogg.

Hospitality students at the college were on hand to serve drinks and nibbles before Ken gave an informative presentation on the college, its history and the courses on offer. Forth Valley College is Scotland's first regional College and has campuses in Falkirk, Alloa and Stirling. The College mission is to Make Learning Work and Ken outlined how each of the campuses has their own curriculum with Falkirk focusing on Engineering and Science; Alloa on Business and Stirling on Creative Industries, Hospitality & Salon Services. A total of 14,300 students are enrolled with around 25% being full time. One of the most impressive statistics was the progression rate where 95% of the students progress to employment or further study after completing their course. The college works closely with local schools, employers and universities including Stirling, Heriot Watt and Robert Gordons in Aberdeen.

Following an excellent 3 course meal, prepared and served by students and staff at The Gallery Restaurant, we were given a guided tour of the building and were very impressed by the extent and quality of the facilities available. The College looks to train students on the best equipment it can obtain, rather than using outdated hand downs. The College also provides Historic Scotland with facilities for training in stonemasonry and traditional building skills. In total, there are around 300 apprentices.

Bob Watson is wondering whether to enrol? (Probably not!)

The success of the College was recognised last month at a national presentation ceremony held at Westminster when Forth Valley College Principal Dr Ken Thomson received the Association of Colleges Beacon Award 2014 for Innovation in Further Education. The prize was awarded for their innovative leadership model and approach to education and training which has resulted in a range of positive outcomes for students, staff and partners.
The Gallery Restaurant is open to the public and details are available online at: http://theplace.forthvalley.ac.uk/catering-dining/the-gallery
Peter Holmes thanked Ken, the staff and students for making us very welcome , for providing an excellent meal and for a very interesting evening.
