President Peter Farr welcomed members and visitors to last week's meeting where the speaker was Alistair (Ally) Gemmell who is Regional Support Officer with Armed Services Advice Project (ASAP).

Ian Ballance, Chair of the Dunblane branch of the Royal British Legion (Scotland), honorary member Ed Campbell and past president Tony Ford were in the audience to hear Ally explain the background to his work. He served with the Argylls then following a civilian job in London, he joined the London Scottish Regiment before working for Lothian and Borders Police. He has been working with ASAP, based in the Stirling Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) since 2010.

ASAP is a service provided by Poppy Scotland and CAB and was set up in 2010 to help services personnel and veterans with issues ranging from legal matters, housing, employment to pension and benefits. Ally stressed that the majority of ex-service personnel adjusted to civilian life without needing support. Some, however, were less fortunate, perhaps due to some of the very disturbing experiences they had during conflicts ranging from WW2, through Korea, Suez, the Falklands and Northern Ireland to more recent operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
He illustrated his work with a few case studies where he had been able to provide valuable support in the local area covering Stirling and Clackmannan. He is clearly very committed to helping ex service personnel and believes there is a need for much better support to be available.

Ex submariner Tony Ford gave a well-deserved vote of thanks on behalf of the club for Ally's very valuable work and for explaining it so passionately.
