2010 Walk

THE LEALHOLM WANDER

Sunday 12 September, 2010

Nearly 50 walkers joined the Lealholm Wander walk, of whom 12 did the shorter Family walk with the rest accepting the challenge of the 13 mile long walk. The consensus of the returning walkers was that it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. The efforts of the walkers raised £1742 for the Great North Air Ambulance, of which £212 resulted from contributions being Gift Aided.

Our 23rd annual walk was held on Sunday 11th September 2011 and was in aid of the Redcar lifeboat, a very worthy cause.

Below are some pictures taken on the Long Walk. They have not been captioned but give you a flavour of the area. Enjoy!

Map of the 2010 walks

Lealholm is one of the prettier villages of the North York Moors. It is surrounded by some very attractive countryside and moorland which we hope to explore in the 2010 walk. The Family Walk of about 6.5 miles is shown on the map. It is a gentle walk traversing some pleasant countryside in the Esk Valley. We first head north from the car park to go past the railway station and then cross some pastures south of Park Wood. Turn left on the road and go down to the stepping stones over the River Esk. After Wheat Bank Farm there is a short stretch on the road before following field paths. Cross the road down to Lealholm, go over Bosco Beck and up to the road to Glaisdale. Turn right and bear left at the cattle grid to follow field paths to Thorney Wait on the road to Rake Farm. Return to Lealholm via Underpark Farm.

The long walk is approximately 13 miles. A longer route is taken north of the river to reduce the amount of road walking before crossing the river by a bridge. We then climb up on to the Heads which separate Great and Little Fryup Dales. From Fairy Cross Plain we go via Woodhead Farm and Wood End Farm to climb the escarpment and join the Wainwright Coast to Coast walk. We follow this route to the edge of Glaisdale where it returns to Lealholm via the same path as the shorter walk.
