Sponsored Cycle Ride 2014

Sponsored Cycle Ride 2014

On Saturday 14 June the Rotary Club of Deal held its seventh annual sponsored cycle ride at Fowlmead Country Park where local primary school children donned their cycle helmets and took to two wheels to complete ten laps of the track to raise money for Canine Partners.

The new Town Mayor Cllr Deryck Murray was there to start the event and to cheer on the participants on what started out to be an overcast and rather chilly day. As the laps progressed the children obviously warmed up as all succeeded in completing the nine mile course, even those on stabilisers. All had beaming smiles to show they had evidently enjoyed the experience with one or two remarking that it made them feel good knowing they were helping others.

Canine Partners (http://www.caninepartners.org.uk/) train dogs to carry out tasks that, because of their disability, their owners are unable to do. Tasks such as opening and closing doors and cupboards, retrieving a variety of items, helping a person to get undressed, pressing buttons and switches, raising the alarm in an emergency, unloading washing machines and tumble driers can all be undertaken by these amazing dogs.

The total raised will not be known until all the sponsorship money has been collected which may take two weeks.

The schools that participated were from Hornbeam Primary School, Sholden C of E Primary School, Kingsdown with Ringwould Primary School, Deal Parochial C of E Primary School and Warden House County Primary School. All children who took part will be presented with certificates by the Town Mayor in Deal Town Hall at 9:30am on Saturday 19th July.

The slide show above has some of the photos that were taken on the day. Parent's permission has been given.
