Raising money for charity is par for the course:
By Emma Bungay (MNDA)

The Rotary Club of Bodmin held a charity golf day at Lanhydrock Hotel and Golf Course on 8th May which raised £6,100 for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

The golf day, which is hailed as the biggest charity golf day in Cornwall, saw forty teams of 4 brave the dismal weather and compete in a texas scramble format for various prizes including a car for a hole in one.

Local businesses donated generously to the cause and volunteers of the local branch of the MND Association prepared a raffle, the tickets of which sold out within just a few hours.

In 2007 Derek Williamson, who organised the event with Bodmin Rotary Club, lost his son and his ex - wife from MND within three weeks of each other; His sister in law died from the disease in 1984. There is no known cause or cure for the progressive, muscle wasting disease which kills 5 people every day.

Derek has since pledged to raise money for MND and promote awareness of the illness; he has helped    to organise numerous golf events in Cornwall and Spain and to date the events have raised over £100,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Bodmin Rotary Club have been great supporters of the golf day since its inception in 2007 and their support has been invaluable.

Graham and Clare Bond (The owners of the Lanhydrock Hotel & Golf Club) have been very supportive and generous in all the background organisation for catering and also ensuring the course was in superb condition.

Bodmin Rotary President Peter Ripley, gave an address before the prize giving, thanking Graham and Clare Bond, the catering staff and the ground staff for all their hard work.

Bodmin Mayor, Andy Coppin presented the winners with their prizes - the overall winners were the Likely Lads who completed with a score of 56.4 - and Derek thanked everyone who attended the golf day despite the “Cornish mizzle”, giving special thanks to the Rotary Club of Bodmin for their overwhelming support in organising the golf day.

Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary Clubs and are open to 12 to 18 year olds. The purpose of the club is to develop leadership skills and self-confidence through teamwork. They agree to undertake one local and one international project per year, build respect for the rights of others, develop personal integrity and advance international understanding. The Bodmin College Club is sponsored by Bodmin & Lostwithiel Rotary Clubs.  Students interested in joining should contact the designated staff member. See www.bodmin.rotary1290.org
