Young Scientist

The annual science competition for Year 5 pupils at Fleetwood schools.

As part of our long-term commitment to the youth of Fleetwood, the annual Young Scientist competition, run on our behalf by the Science department at Fleetwood High School, hopes to engender an interest in science at an early age.

This first half of this year's competition featured a CSI theme, with the teams given the scenario of an unspecified crime and a series of clues found at the scene; a set of fingerprints, a thread and a spot of ink. By comparing the fingerprints with four known suspects, microscopically comparing the thread with other threads including one taken from the perpetrator's clothing and using chromatography to identify the pen which was the source of the ink, the teams all correctly identified the correct suspect and, more importantly, were able to give reasons for their choice.

The second half consisted of a science quiz with questions covering chemical, physical and biological topics.

After a very close contest, the winners were declared as Charles Saer School. Runners-up were Flakefleet School and Shakespeare School.

All the teams were exceptional and the final result was always in doubt until the very last question. Well done everybody!

My thanks go to all the various staff members from the competing schools who gave up their time to prepare their teams, to the teams themselves for the way they acquitted themselves and finally to all the science staff at Fleetwood High School for putting together such an interesting challenge.
