WE ARE A GLOBAL FAMILY

Members of our club frequently travel to other countries and meet with local Rotarians. Sometimes this is only for friendship. Such links may also open doors to become involved in social or humanitarian projects.

Gill Poole recently travelled to Nepal, her sixth visit to a remote village. Here is what she says:

I arrived in Nepal safely after a smooth and uneventful flight. We have now moved from Kathmandu to Pokhara awaiting our departure into the Panchumol valley to continue our work.

The drive from Kathmandu was a long and arduous one on what s deemed to be one of the Worlds most dangerous roads and today I could quite see why. A Rotarian from the Himalayan Ghurkas club drove us on the 8 hr journey and as previously felt the trip was scary in daylight but when it reached dark it was positively petrifying, -people walking on the side of the road you couldnt see, tractors and vehicles without lights and suddenly the road disappearing into what could only be described as a dirt track (this is the main and only road from the capital to the East and south of the country). We did well though as we only had 6 near misses, I lost count with the misses and only caused 1 accident between 2 lorries!

We go into the village tomorrow to face the challenges that the project is currently facing and try and resolve these together with audit and move the project on. There is a big celebration tomorrow of the project and we will be joined by 8 members of the Rotary Club of the Himalayan Ghurkas who have driven from Kathmandu and Chitwan to be with us, the President of the club Narayan Gurung sends his greetings to the members of Mirfield club and our club president.

My regards to all members of the club.
