Briefing for Rotary Clubs in District 1190 and District Officers

Will Club Presidents and Secretaries please ensure that all Club Members see this briefing
The Tournament, which is an annual and well established event, will take place on March 14th 2014 (March 13th at Windermere) at ten venues across Lancashire and Cumbria. The Cumbria venues are in Barrow, Carlisle, Windermere and Workington. The Lancashire venues are in Accrington, Chorley, Lancaster, Lytham, Nelson and Preston. The usual starting time at each venue is 9.00 am to 9.30 am and the finishing time 2.45 pm to 3.15 pm. A Rotarian Area Organizer is in charge of each venue.  With this briefing you will receive two spread sheets. One has the names and communication details of all the Area Organisers and the other the addresses of the ten venues.
The Tournament is for schools and colleges in the two counties. We aim to have around 300 teams taking part, each comprising of four young people aged 11 to 18, who are interested in studying design and technology. Also there will be teams of teachers taking part and carrying out the same task as their students

The objectives of the Tournament are:

*To encourage the young people taking part to see design and technology as stimulating, attractive and challenging
* To give those taking part an opportunity to develop their team building and communication skills whilst solving a design and technology problem at the level and with the assessment criteria required by the National Curriculum
* To give teams of teachers, many of whom come together for the first time on the day, an opportunity to discuss design and technology issues whilst working on the task for the day at the Advanced level
* To give groups of Rotary Clubs an opportunity to work together for the benefit of young people and to strengthen links with the schools and colleges in their area

We aim to achieve the Tournament objectives:
