6 March 2014 Morven Craib - Euroscola

Morven Craib from Queen Victoria School gave a talk to the Club following her trip to Strasbourg as the Club's Euroscola candidate. Some of the photos from her trip can be seen in the slideshow.

Thursday evening's well attended meeting heard from our Euroscola candidate, Morven Craib from Queen Victoria School, who was accompanied by head girl Caitlin Willis and her French teacher, Laura McIlkenny.

Morven had just returned from a 5 day trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg as one of a total of 500 or so students from 21 other EU member states. She was in a group of 26 from Scotland.

Morven gave an excellent illustrated presentation of her experiences, which included a street survey where they conversed in French with the locals and asked them what they knew of Scotland, with some interesting responses! Thursday was the main event where all the students assembled in the Strasbourg Parliament building for a day of presentations, questions, discussions and voting on issues relevant to them. There were a total of 15 issues for discussion, of which 5 were from the Scottish contingent.

It was not all hard work, though and after the Thursday session, the group celebrated their successes in the evening with a traditional ceilidh and were joined by the Spanish students who took great pleasure in learning some Scottish dances - and teaching our students some Spanish ones!

Mark Pentleton, who led the Scottish students, said 'Morven was an outstanding participant on this visit and her friendly personality made her a pleasure to work with. She communicated very well in the target language which she used at every opportunity. Not only did she rise to the various challenges, but she also assisted her peers in doing the same. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Morven and she has been an excellent ambassador for her school and sponsoring Rotary Club.'

Morven thanked the club for sponsoring her for an experience of a lifetime and was thanked for her talk by Andrew Hilley.
