Friday 13th June 2014
President Martin Ross welcomed our guests Alloa President Celia Norton and Jen
Shearer of the Callander club, and from Aachen Past president Marie
Therese Fischer and her husband Wolfgang Fischer.
We had great pleasure in welcoming Fay McPherson who was inducted into
our club as a new Rotarian.
Colin Bayes intimated three local AM/AM charity golf events, Bridge of Allan
26/6/14, Callender 1/8/14 and Abertay on 10/8/14. Participants are
required for all three. President Martin attended Ochil Mountain Rescue
to present the group with our donation.
Rotarian Tom Wilson spoke to the club on nursery rhymes. Although they
are often associated with children, sometimes as an educational aid
emphasizing repetition and rhythm, many arise from historical events.
Thirty days hath September came with the change to the Julian calendar
in Roman times and remember remember the fifth of November commemorates
the foiling of the gunpowder plot. Some are tongue twisters or as the
Americans say, word cramps used to correct speech defects. They were
first collected in book form in the 18th century. Their origins are very
varied, myth and history often confused, and the original meaning of
even the best known is not always certain. The vote of thanks was
given by Alastair McNeill.
Next week's speakers host Philip Allison, visitors host Alastair McNeill.
