Jo Middlemiss presented the club with an very informative talk on the Ethiopia Medical Project, EMP, she set up with her relative Maureen Burnett.
She explained how they had become involved with the project. Beatrice Gill, a Swiss nurse, who worked voluntarily in a small undermanned clinic treating prolapse in women in the South of Ethiopia. She knew the need for support, told them about it several years ago. They travelled there, witnessed the need for themselves, helped in a small way and returned to Scotland, determined to do more.
They set up the EMP with aim of providing support, raising awareness and funding for this project. They asked the clinic what they wanted and the reply was a 4X4 vehicle. However, due to the condition of the roads, it was decided to pay for transport rather than provide a vehicle. Ethiopia Medical Project (EMP) aims to assist
