Primary School Chess Challenge

Rotarian Rev Matthew Rodger pulls off another successful season for the Westhill & District Primary Schools Chess after-school classes

The finals of the Westhill & District Primary School Chess Championship 2013 took place at Trinity Church, Westhill on 4 May.  The competition was open to children P3 to P7 and the participating schools were Echt, Skene and the three Westhill Primary schools.                                    During the preceding months, 70 to 80 children battled it out to become champion of their school and to represent their school in the finals.  The five finalists participated in evenly fought contests, after which the winner was judged to be Manav Sankriti from Crombie School.  He received the trophy on behalf of his school from New Generations Convenor Doug Hudson, as well as receiving an individual cup.  The other finalists each received a medal.                                                                                                      This inaugural competition was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westhill & District.  Special mention must be made to Rotarian Rev Matthew Rodger, who has been coaching and encouraging the children for the past two years and was also highly involved in organising this competition.
