The monthly RIBI Service Report

Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland

Welcome to the March 2013 Service News, linking you to news, resources and information from all of Rotary GB&I's Service Committees. It is emailed, monthly, to all 35,000+ members whose email addresses are on the RI database. If Club Secretaries are aware of members with an email address, but not on the RI database, please forward to them (and, ideally, add their details to the database). Service News editions are archived on the Rotary GB&I website, in the Updates area.

If you cannot read this email properly (due to your email settings), click on this link and a web page showing the email as intended will open.

Did you know that FoodBanks are now a Rotary International Project? In 2013/14 we will be formally bringing into place this project with the help of The Trussell Trust, an umbrella organisation for FoodBanks in the UK. For more information please email Rotary@TrussellTrust.org

Dates for your diary:

Our recent activity:

  • At the Rotary GB&I Assembly 2013/14 District Community Chairs were briefed about preparing for the Community Service Calendar. For those of you who are existing Community Chairs and will be handing over to new Rotary colleagues, please begin a transition plan to hand over and support your colleagues.
  • Dictionaries for Life were distributed to incoming District Governors and Community Chairs
  • The Literacy in a Box Trust was discussed and Rotarians were handed these leaflets. Please work with your colleagues in International & New Generations to support this project
  • Rotary Resilience has received Rotary GB&I approval to adopt the title Community Emergency Service (CES) from 1st July 2013 - come and meet us at the Community Services Stand in Harrogate to find out more, or email rotaryces@gmail.com to express your interest in receiving further information
  • If you have any ideas for The Rotary Spring Clean 2013, please contact Bob Parfitt at ludibob@tesco.net

Peter Dancy, Rotary GB&I Community Service Chairman

We have changed our name! The Rotary GB&I General Council have agreed to us being called the Rotary GB&I Environmental Sustainability Group to better reflect our aims and objectives.

We got 20 entrants for the Rodney Huggins Environment Award. The winners will be announced at the Rotary GB&I Conference. I think this is the most entrants we have ever had, but it is still less than one per district!

A new leaflet on the control of Himalayan Balsam has been produced and is on the Rotary GB&I Environmental web site. Now is the time to start planning what can be done to reduce this very invasive weed.

The closing date for FREE TREES from The Woodland Trust for planting in November is the 13th September 2013, but do get your applications in sooner if you can.

Climate Week was very successful with over 3400 events taking place and over half a million people involved.

Coming to the Rotary GB&I Conference on the 12th to 14th April? Please visit us at the House of Friendship where there will be leaflets and someone to talk about what you and your club can do for the Environment. The Sustainability Trust also expects to be represented.

Terry Knowles, member Environmental Sustainability Group
