Tom, Countryside Ranger with DGC, is a self confessed Tree Geek so in view of all sorts of nasty things in the tree world he was more than able to update us appropriately.
Whilst he could have talked about making wick oil lamps for lighting dark rooms and various other highly appropriate country skills he chose to concentrate on his top 5 trees.
Supporting acts of yew , witch elm, alder, and oak figured large but his number one obsession is ASH. Ably illustrated, Tom justified his choices and explained the various contributions and problems that these trees had in the landscape.
Provocatively proposing the re- introduction of wolves to aid tree regeneration his hatred of Sitka was made very clear as well. Thoroughly entertaining and educational at the same time Tom's talk also displayed his wood carving skills.
Whilst we do not normally report VOT's that provided, off the cuff, by a certain plumber with significant skills in dogeral and latin plant names ( that I have forgotten but sounded extremely long) cannot go without record.
" It is obvious that your subject had grown on you over the yews and it is good to see you have branched out into carving wood. I think larchly you could cause a rowan with your views of the Sitka Spruce if you were on the beech.
I am sure the Alder members found your talk very interesting, certainly the younger members did. Your knowledge and enthusiasm for your subject is obvious."
Sorry but a couple of other extempory wooden references were not recorded.
New talent emerges every week at Thornhill & District Rotary. Thanks Ian.
