President's Message

A message from the President of Cheam & Sutton Rotary

Thank you for the effort you have already made to visit this website. Let me summarise what the Cheam and Sutton Rotary is all about. As part of the worldwide Rotary International network, we aim to help people and in doing so to widen our range of friendships.

During the last year we raised and donated some £30000 to charities – that’s about £1000 per member. You may already know how we do this. You may have been amongst the thousands of people who enjoyed our 2018 May Fair, in Cheam Park on Spring Bank Holiday Monday. That will have raised over £5000 for Sutton Mencap. You may have welcomed Santa and his collectors on the Christmas Float which makes the rounds in December. That raised over £12000 for local charities.

We are strong supporters of Rotary International initiatives such as the construction of low cost, low maintenance ‘sand dams’ in arid areas of the world, and the long term commitment to wipe out polio.

We also join in voluntary work – for example, we run a social group for the elderly, collect clothing and other goods to facilitate discharges and reduce ‘bed blocking’ at St Helier Hospital, and during the last year we chose Cheam Park to fulfil four times over the Rotary commitment to plant one tree per member each year.

At meetings, we listen to speakers, plan our projects and socialise. The main meetings are on the first and third Tuesday evenings of each month at the Holiday Inn, Sutton. But for those who cannot make these, meetings of our Satellite Club take place on Saturday mornings at the Harrow, Cheam.

Our Club calendar is on our website and you can follow us on our Facebook page for news of what we are doing.

That’s what we’re about. To say what we’re NOT about, we stand outside politics – both national and local. And, we’re not any kind of exclusive organisation. I demonstrate this myself – I joined only just over a year ago and now I’m President! We have members of all kinds and very much welcome new members of all kinds.

So, do you want the satisfaction that comes from making a difference in your world, and of giving something back to your community? Being with Rotary can provide that satisfaction, and also comradeship and fun. Please contact us.  If you don't want to join but would like to help out occasionally then again please contact us. We could not do what we do without people like you.
