Young Musician and Youth Speaks Competitions

The week-end of 6th and 7th Feb 2016 saw the Regional finals of Rotary Youth Speaks and Young Musician competitions. In Youth Speaks the Keswick School team of Bethan Savage, Michael Huit and Mathew Rawlinson gave an excellent and funny speech about four human character traits that can help anyone to identify how people think and react to certain situations. They were entered in a strong field of 11 teams at Kirkham Grammar School, near Preston, and despite a very strong performance, they did not progress through to the next round.

In Young Musician, Keswick Rotary was represented by Keswick School’s Alex Tsoi on piano in the instrumentalist competition and Erin Collins singing in the vocalist competition.  Alex played some excellent Bach and Brahms against other competitors playing piano, cornet, tuba and flute; however he did not progress to the next round. In the vocalist competition Erin sang some powerful evocative songs, including one written by herself in the style of Joni Mitchell. Both are still very young compared to the majority of their fellow competitors and we have high hopes for their future success. On behalf of Keswick Rotary, well done to everyone competing, you did Keswick School proud, and thanks to the teachers, especially Annabelle Allport (English) and Marie Lee (Music) who did so much to encourage and coach the students.
