Wolds Walk. Fifth Wednesday.

The fifth Wednesday was some what different from others in that President Mike had organised an evening walk before the meal.

The plan was meet at the Swallow Inn at 5pm on Wednesday  29^th August. Unfortunately it rained throughout the afternoon and continued to do so upto 5pm.Nevertheless those who had not been put off by the rain gathered in the car park at the Swallow Inn.The walk was  lead by Steve Jake from the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service.He explained that as we went along he would point out items of interest.

The group set off  towards Swallow  Village and Steve stopped to talk about the church and the village hall.We crossed the A46 towards Swallow Vale farm and onwards to Riby Grove Farm. On the way Steve stopped to point out fauna and flora. Also  information about the formation of the land.At this point John Clarke gave further information on the geological aspects and evelopment of the strata.

We stopped before Riby Grove Farm to look back at two iron age barrows,much reduced by ploughing.Roger Cropp was also bird spotting.

We continued towards Irby Dales stopping again to look at some vegetation before crossing the A46 and onwards towards the Swallow Inn.The walk lasted 2.5 hours  and we covered 5 miles . We all agreed that we could have learnt more from Steve had time permitted.

President Mike thanked Steve for the conducted walk and the information on a variety of topics.

We collected money form the walkers and this has been split between the Lincolnshire Bat Trust and the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union.

At the inn we then enjoyed an evening meal.
