Vocational Visit to Biomass Plant at Glenrothes

Tue, Sep 13th 2011 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

On Tuesday, 9 members plus Billy Phillips son, Paul, visited the site of the new RWE Biomass Plant under construction at Glenrothes, hosted by President Rod Jones in his capacity as Construction Manager on this £200m project. Monday's visit had been cancelled due to the tail end of Hurricane Katia but Tuesday was dry and fairly calm. After mastering the intricacies of the fingerprint entry system, we were given a safety induction and an overview of the construction programme before getting a tour of the site. Rod explained the new plant would replace an existing coal fired power supply for Tullis Russell paper makers and something like 400,000 tonnes of new and recycled wood would provide the fuel, supplemented by gas if required.

A very enjoyable and informative visit was topped off by a bite of supper at the Tormaukin Inn at Glendevon.
