1 December 2011 Partners Evening - Derek Collins - Setting the World on Fire

The Westlands Hotel was the venue for the winter season Partners Evening where 53 members, partners and visitors were welcomed by President Rod Jones. All enjoyed an excellent 3 course meal before the main event of the evening with a demonstration of "Flaming Art" from club member Derek Collins.  Much to the surprise of many of those assembled Derek not only showed off his skill with a range of pigments and lacquer, but then added thinners to his picture and set it alight!  The effect was magnificent with marvellous pieces created for all to see.  Derek interspersed his demonstrations with tales of his upbringing as the eldest of 8 children (and his Gran) in a three bed house in Airdrie, an apprenticeship and most successful career as a Painter and Decorator and then using his thirst for knowledge in his chosen profession to lead him to his current success as an artist. Certainly his art showed off his great skill and appreciation of the use of colour to create fine effects.

Assistant District Governor Samantha Miller was on hand to present the Club with a Presidential Citation for the work of the Club over the last year under the leadership of immediate past President Lawrie Orr.

Attention now turns to the final event before the Christmas break with the Grand Rotary Christmas Concert to be held at 7:30pm on 17 December in Dunblane Cathedral.  Entertainment will be provided by local musicians, the Rosenethe Singers, the Cathedral Handbell Ringers and the star turn from Ayrshire - classical singing sensation Nicola Cassells.  Everyone is welcome to come along as a fine start to the festive season, with a few tickets still available via Mailers in Bridge of Allan, and The Scottish International Relief shop or Smallprint in Dunblane.
