Tour of Battle of Bannockburn sites.

Sat, Jul 9th 2011 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Members of the Club and their partners were treated, at the weekend, to some splendid tours of the possible locations of the battle of Bannockburn, led by Club Member Ranald Shepherd.

Starting at Bannockburn Heritage Centre, Ranald explained the history and politics leading up to the Battle in 1314.  The tour then set off to St Ninians, where some of the logistics of the battle were checked against the difficult landscape, before heading to Braehead for a welcome cup of tea and a cake, and then heading off over the Carse where Ranald put the logistics of crossing the Bannockburn into context.

The tour then headed back towards the Heritage centre past the most likely site of the battle somewhere to the North of Brucefields.

The weather was sunny apart from a short rain storm, when we all found out the secret weapon that Eddie Campbell had in his rucksack. (see picture), on Sunday afternoon and all agreed that a most interesting and informative afternoon had been spent.
