Metal Detectors Rally 2010

A field on the outskirts of Wootton Bassett was the lure for 43 participants in this years Metal Detectors Rally.  Although the weather could, at best, be described as 'changeable', it turned out to be a very successful event with numerous fascinating finds. 

A first time 'detectorist' was delighted when she found a George III shilling, dated 1816.  Someone else found a 1797 penny, die-cast in copper and still in pristine condition.  With numerous 'moaning minnie' bullets found, it was clear that the land had seen some serious action in years gone by.  Other finds included copper plaque, lead stud, various coins and buttons, palm guard and a 200yr old buckle.  The oldest item was a blue Saxon bead from the 7th century, which was seen just lying on the surface. 

Terence Hinde and his bride-to-be, Fernanda, were delighted with their haul which included the 18th century brass barrel-tap also pictured.
